Hi, Can you please introduce yourself?

Sarah Hawley is a serial entrepreneur and investor, having founded eight companies since 2009. Following three successful multi-million dollar exits, she is currently the founder and CEO of growmotely.com (the first global platform for sourcing, growing and leading remote teams). She’s personally fueled by a passion for challenging the status quo of how we work, conscious culture and leadership, community, diversity and equality, and living life on one’s own terms.

What’s your profession, what do you do?

I am a tech entrepreneur, CEO & Founder of Growmotely, the world's first platform connecting conscious companies with skilled and experienced remote professionals (inc. recruitment, culture tools, payroll and benefits!).

What company do you work for? Are you a freelancer or Digital Nomad?

While I currently split time between my two homes in Austin, TX and Keystone, CO and on the road in our truck camper, pre-pandemic I was nomadic for the past 5 years. I spent a lot of time in Bali, Guatemala and Tel Aviv.

How did you start with a remote work journey?

I turned all my companies remote in 2014, as I wanted to travel more and ultimately move to the US (I'm originally from Australia).

What do you think are the main benefits of working remotely?

The freedom to create our lifestyle exactly as we want it, and in a way that is most beneficial to us as individuals. To spend our days in places that feel great for us, and with the people we most want to be in physical presence with.

Do you think there are disadvantages or that you’re missing something by working remotely?

Nope. Nada. Zip.

From what cities or countries have you worked since you have become remote? What are your favourite countries or cities to work from?

Too many to count! My favorite spots though are, Ubud in Bali, Antigua in Guatemala, Tel Aviv in Isreal, Siem Reap in Cambodia and anywhere in the mountains of Colorado! I did really enjoy the Greek Islands and the Italian Riviera one summer!

From what type of places do you prefer to work? Home, co-working spaces, coffee shops, or others?

I mix it up based on how I'm feeling each day. Mostly it's home or at a friends house, mixed in with the occasional cafe (less now I'm a mom) and co-working spots I used a lot more when I was actively traveling as I'd seek out, and stay in, co-living / co-working spots like Outpost.

What places would you like to travel to while working remotely?

My faves are USA, Bali, Guatemala and Tel Aviv.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them? Share your remote productivity, communication, management, etc. tips based on your experience!

I'd say the main challenge has alway just been internet connectivity and sometimes landing in a place with poor connectivity making life challenging. I'd also say when moving around a lot there would be times and days of lost productivity and big catch up sessions once settled.

What tools do you use to improve productivity and manage work efficiently?

I love Basecamp and use it to run the main workflow and communications at Growmotely. I also LOVE to VoiceNote so we have group chats set up where we can voice note each other and carry on async conversations. We're fully remote, and completely globally distributed so async is the only way for us to work, it also provides the highest level of sovereignty and personal freedom for each of us. That's important for me.

How do you manage your business and taxes as a remote working professional?

We have tax advisers for this.

What advice would you give to people looking to work remotely?

Register your profile on growmotely.com and we're here to help you find your dream role.

Do you work on any side projects?

Nope, I'm laser focused on the multi-billion dollar opportunity we have with Growmotely, not to mention the ability to change the way everyone is experiencing work in all the positive ways!
