Job Description

Taylor & Francis, a leading international academic publishing company has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Journals Portfolio Manager in their Earth and Environmental Sciences team.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Overseeing the editorial and financial performance of an existing portfolio of journals including managing detailed budgets 

  • Take a proactive role in journal development and growth 

  • Pro-actively manage the article pipeline to deliver against agreed service levels, collaborating with peer review and production colleagues, engaging with new services for pipeline management and influencing new practice

  • Build, maintain and share thorough knowledge of market need and competitor activity to inform decisions on new journals and existing journal development

  • Building a network of contacts and developing strategic plans to enhance our position in the field

  • Liaising with and supporting journal editors and academic society officers 

  • Liaising with global team members and colleagues across the wider Taylor & Francis Group

  • Maintain a strong external focus e.g. attending conferences, editorial board meetings etc. creating profile and relevant networks to increase subject and customer knowledge and understanding
  • Draft and review publishing contracts and ensure they are renewed in a timely fashion

  • Assisting with new journal proposals and bids

  • Managing general administration of the list

  • Providing appropriate cover in the Head of Portfolio’s absence

Qualifications

What we are looking for:

  • Educated to graduate level or equivalent
  • Previous experience in academic journal publishing preferred, though experience in account management or business development will also be considered
  • Experience with developing and/or managing Open Access journals would be a bonus
  • Willingness to work with confidence, flexibility, initiative and independence 
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Familiarity with, and an awareness of, academic editors’ and societies’ needs in publishing activities will be an advantage
  • Able to manage a range of duties and maintain focus on deadlines and priorities 
  • Ability to work remotely, self-motivated and able to use initiative when necessary
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and adaptable to different work/cultural contexts
  • Excellent eye for detail and able to keep accurate records
  • Work to a high standard, highly professional in all conduct
  • Must have high computer literacy, proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly excel, familiar with online technologies
  • Good team player
  • Flexibility in working hours to liaise with colleagues in other time zones
  • Quick to adapt and learn 
  • Kindly note that this is not a writing/journalism/copyediting position

  • We currently have capacity for this role to be UK based or within one of our Asia Pacific regions, however you must have the right to live and work within the location you have applied for
  • You must have the right to work and live in Japan
  • This role is open to candidates in all locations across Japan. Taylor & Francis has multiple options for how employees can work based on their role – be that in the Office, at home or somewhere in between.
  • Occasional travel may be required (post-Covid).
