Sr. Backend Engineer

Hydrobuilder Holdings has been formed through the acquisitions of Hydrobuilder.com, a leading online retailer of hydroponics and horticultural supplies, GreenCoast Hydroponics, the second-largest hydroponics retailer in the United States, and Los Angeles, Calif.-based Elevated Equipment Supply, full-service equipment and supplies provider for the commercial cultivation and specialty agriculture industries. More recently we have acquired Way to Grow, a Colorado-based retailer of aeroponic, hydroponic, and greenhouse products as well as Home Grown Ventures (HGV) Nutrients, a Washington state-based manufacturer and distributor of a proprietary blend of water-soluble nutrients used for commercial agriculture. Together the five businesses create a leading omnichannel retailer of specialty agriculture and hydroponics equipment and supplies.
 

Our expert team of engineers solves the many challenges and requests that come with our evolving and growing technical stack. As a Senior Backend Engineer you work in a fast moving environment and need to be constantly looking for ways to improve our systems. As part of this job you will help train and guide other team members. To excel in this position you will need experience building products across the stack and a firm understanding of web frameworks, APIs, databases, and multiple programming languages including Python and PHP. You are part of a cross-functional team solving the challenges that impact both the front end and back end architecture.

Objectives

• Work across the full stack, building highly scalable distributed solutions that enable positive user experiences
• Develop new features and infrastructure development in support of rapidly emerging business and project requirements
• Assume leadership of projects from conceptualization to deployment
• Test software to ensure responsiveness and efficiency
• Work closely with other engineers to produce performant and scalable solutions.
• Ensure application performance, uptime, and scale, maintaining high standards of code quality and thoughtful application design
• Work with development methodologies, adhering to best practices

Responsibilities

• Participate in all aspects of software development including design, implementation, and deployment
• Architect and provide guidance on building end-to-end systems optimized for speed and scale
• Work primarily in PHP, Python, and JavaScript
• Code review and guidance for best practices, functionality and quality assurance
• Lead end to end projects with other team members and 3rd party vendors
• Engage with designers and other engineers, and collaborate to create best in class user experiences
• Collaborate across time zones via chat client, email, GitHub comments, and frequent video conferences
• Communicate clearly to various stakeholders, ensuring that problems are being addressed efficiently and business needs are being met in a timely and satisfactory fashion
• Provide leadership in mentorship for other team members

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or engineering or equivalent experience in the engineering field
• Experience building web applications
• Experience designing and integrating RESTful APIs
• Knowledge of PHP, Python, and Javascript Frameworks
• Excellent debugging and optimization skills
• Experience with retail technologies – ecommerce, POS, Supply Chain Systems is a plus
• Unit/integration testing experience
