We are seeking an enthusiastic Musical Director to bring their talents to our winter Middle School musical theater production. Reporting to the Director of Theater Arts, this part-time, seasonal opening is an opportunity for a creative individual to contribute to an award-winning Theater Arts program and craft an unforgettable experience with our youngest learners. Shows are produced in the Wyckoff Blackbox Theater and the Seldin Performing Arts Center: state-of-the-art, flexible, dedicated theater spaces with full theatrical sound and light capability and the assistance of a robust Technical Theater crew composed of faculty, staff, and students.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
Attend creative team meetings with the Director, Choreographer, and Designers to help develop the overall vision of the show
Participate in auditions, evaluate the vocal abilities of all auditionees and offer casting suggestions based on vocal abilities
Study the script and music, teach music to the cast in large groups and one-on-one , and lead regular warm-ups with the cast before shows and technical rehearsals
Key Skills and Qualities:
A college degree in music or musical theatre preferred; additional training in musicianship, voice, acting, composition, orchestration and/or conducting desirable
Must be able to sight read music, sing (well enough to teach singers), and play the piano
Creative flair and ability to work with a variety of different people and departments
Experience working on a production with children, preferably ages 9-14
Schedule:
Auditions November 15-18. Rehearsals start November 29th and run through February 24th, with a two-week break from December 17th - January 2nd.
Rehearsals run Monday & Wednesday 3:00-4:00, and Tuesday & Thursday 2:30-4:00.
Technical rehearsals run Monday February 28th - Thursday March 3rd from 2:30-6:00.
Performances take place March 4th at 7:00pm and March 5th at 3:00pm.
While on-campus instruction is required, we will consider hybrid/virtual work arrangements for certain aspects of the role on a case-by-case basis.
