Job Description

Under direction of the Director of Laboratories, this position is responsible for providing the blend of analytical and technical understanding and expertise necessary to support the implementation, development, maintenance and functionality of Department of Pathology Information Systems currently (Cerner, CoPath, Meditech) and related interfaces. Provides training and written procedures for users of the LIS, currently Clinical Lab Support, Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Molecular Pathology, Surgical Pathology, Histology and Cytology. Provides high-level data access and reporting from these systems.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide alternatives and recommendations to address specific departmental needs for information and technology-based solutions.
  • Provides direction and support to Medical Directors, Supervisors and Technical Staff of all Pathology Laboratories, or issues related to Informations Technology.
  • Understands and considers operational functions and processes of interacting groups (including but not exclusive to, Patient Accounts, Medical Records, Finance & Professional Billing groups).
  • Provides and maintains written documentation of project time plans, action plans, guidelines and educational sessions.
  • Provides on-going training for all laboratory personnel. Structures training sessions and schedules as needed.
  • Develops effective procedures and educational tools, which provide support and assistance to all laboratory users.
  • Develops effective solutions (technical and non-technical) to systems related issues.
  • Maintains all database files. Designates and trains alternate personnel.
  • Assists with the development of systems policies and procedures.
  • Provides on-going systems enhancements, maintenance and troubleshooting to ensure optimal system performance.
  • Oversees all processes of system expansion, including implementation, training, and ongoing maintenance (i.e.: For additional users outside the Pathology environment including outreach clients).
  • Provide high level reporting of system data to Pathology Management and other hospital managers. Includes report-writing, export of data to other applications and high-level data manipulation. Provides quarterly Quality Indicators to Pathology Administration and/or Quality Assurance Directors.
  • Communicates effectively with Information Systems staff, LIS vendors, Pathology Departments Supervisors to develop and maintain and optimize the LIS applications and their associated interfaces.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Self-directed: Uses Director of Laboratories as a resource. Works autonomously and shows excellent judgments.
  • Analytical ability demonstrates understanding of impact of change/enhancements across multiple systems.
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of the Pathology Laboratories operations, hospital and professional billing and finance.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of interface file formats.
  • Demonstrates an excellent working knowledge of hardware systems and architecture.
  • Requires excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to coordinate and prioritize tasks and project components.
  • Requires excellent teaching and educational organizational skills.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Reports to Director of Laboratories, Department of Pathology.
  • Works closely with Information Systems Department and Technical Analysts.
  • Interacts on a daily basis with Laboratory personnel, Information Systems personnel, and other departments serviced by the Pathology Systems.
  • Works closely with Pathology Management team and other managers to provide decisions influencing data, tools and processes.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Laboratory working conditions subject to chemicals and bodily fluids
