Company Description

Genomics England successfully led the world-leading 100,000 Genomes Project, which compared and analysed individuals’ genetic codes to help diagnose, treat and prevent illness.

We're now accelerating our impact, working with the NHS to further develop and embed genomic healthcare and research in Britain.  Our next chapter involves working with patients, doctors, scientists, government and industry to improve genomic testing, and help researchers access the health data and technology they need to make new medical discoveries and create more effective, targeted medicines for everybody.

Job Description

As a Scientific Manager, your role will be to work with world leading key opinion leaders in cancer, rare disease and associated cross-cutting research, who make up the Genomics England Clinical Interpretation Partnership (GECIP). The GECIP is the consortium of academic and clinical researchers working on the data in the Genomics England National Genomic Research Library (NGRL), collected from the 100,000 Genomes Project, the NHS Genomic Medicine Service and beyond. The successful candidate will work with the world’s finest scientific minds to accelerate scientific endeavour across the spectrum of foundational science to translational research, by progressing GECIP members’ research and identifying new scientific opportunities and collaborations – all for the benefit of patients.

Your mission will be to drive engagement with the GECIP; to externally represent Genomics England within the research community; to help researchers maximize their scientific output and use knowledge of the field to provide strategic direction, new opportunities for research and facilitate collaborations, while supporting and shaping the scientific aims and mission of Genomics England.

  • You'll be accountable for maximising output, quality and value that the GECIP community derive from the data in the NGRL, acting as the principal contact for academic and clinical researchers working on NGRL data and proactively engaging with the GECIP community to develop their research plans.
  • You'll own the GECIP framework, research policies and governance, and its synergy with Genomics England research functions and aims, by highly proactively engaging with the wider scientific research community to represent Genomics England; to identify prospective opportunities and liaise with key researchers to shape them; and thereby to support the evolution and delivery of Genomics England’s scientific mission by keeping it relevant and progress science workstream initiatives through which it is delivered.
  • You'll forge and manage scientifically driven academia-industry collaborations.
  • You'll work with researchers and relevant colleagues at Genomics England to facilitate clinical interactions through appropriate mechanisms.
  • Finally, you'll guide the development of research tools and platforms to support scientific research needs and necessary information governance and ethics requirements.

Skills & Experience for Success

We anticipate that the ideal candidate will have/be:

  • Direct experience of developing and managing effective relationships with external researchers, and demonstrable experience of undertaking scientific research in an academic or commercial setting
  • Highly motivated, with the ability to work with multiple research projects or groups, manage workloads, perform self-directed working, and meet deadlines
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify potential problems and opportunities to manage and resolve them effectively
  • Ability to see the bigger picture
  • Manage expectations and competing demands in a complex, fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work within a team and build effective working relationships
  • Experience of proactively and assertively managing working groups, ideally those with scientific content
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and ability to work with discretion

Qualifications

Life science (or a genetics-related field) post graduate degree with experience of a post-graduate research environment, or a medical degree with experience of clinical research, or equivalent experience
