The Performance and Databases Team is Wolt’s center of expertise in performance engineering and databases. It’s mission is to support Wolt’s growth, performance and reliability by providing visibility, expertise, vision and tooling to development teams.

We are now looking to strengthen our small but highly skilled Performance and Databases team with a great Database Engineer to make sure we can tackle big and small database topics alike, from optimization to architecture. Our primary database technologies today are PostgreSQL and MongoDB. Our engineers are quite equipped in writing services against our databases, as that is one of the hiring criterias. However we want to support them with our in-depth understanding of our databases and their underlying concepts, making sure we are using them in an optimal way and that they scale with us. 

As part of the team, you’ll be monitoring and following the databases to find potential problems, working to define and implement database architecture for our service but also work as an evangelist for database optimization and best practices within the organization, towards all of our (almost 30) engineering teams. You’ll be working closely with the performance engineers, observability experts and database engineers in your team as well as with your DevOps colleagues in the Infrastructure team. Much of your time will be spent with the application developers on database topics specific to their services.

We expect you to have extensive expertise in PostgreSQL but also appreciate experience in other SQL or Document databases, for example MongoDB.  

You’ll be successful in this position if you are experienced in areas such as: high-availability and zero-downtime database architectures,data and schema modeling, partitioning and sharding, scalability and capacity planning, resource usage analysis (I/O, memory, etc). You’re great at performance optimization and monitoring, optimizing indexes, queries, parameters and locking. You’re well versed in HA and backup/restore procedures, automation and tooling for DBs.

Familiarity with modern cloud environments, DevOps tools and practises as well as database service providers such as AWS, MongoDB Atlas or Aiven will help you get up to speed fast, as will experience in environments with Python or JVM languages in use. We hope you have worked in an always-on, high growth environment where you've experienced rapid scaling and continuous deployment.

The compensation will be a negotiable combination of monthly pay and Wolt stock options. The latter make it exceptionally easy to be excited about our company growing and doing well, as you'll own a piece of the pie.
