Job Description

Closing Date: 4th November 2021

We currently have an exciting opportunity for an Editor (maternity cover) at Routledge, working on a diverse range of academic books on the Museum Studies, Heritage Studies, Conservation and Library & Information Science list.

Reporting to the Publisher of Archaeology, you will help grow the list by implementing and developing our current commissioning strategy in line with overall team objectives, including cultivating an awareness of the differing academic and professional markets for the list.

You will work closely with existing authors and editors, and liaise with editorial colleagues across the wider Humanities team, as well as working with other internal departments such as production, marketing, rights, and sales to champion our titles and ensure both our handover and revenue goals are met. The position may also involve conference attendance and campus calling.

What you'll be doing:

  • Meeting annual commissioning and revenue goals, commissioning new books that respond to market needs.
  • Meeting annual publishing goals, working with an editorial assistant to ensure that manuscripts are submitted on time and handed over to production on schedule, and that publication dates are met.
  • Researching the market, with the goal of commissioning new projects as appropriate.
  • Identifying market needs and recruiting authors to write books that meet these needs, evaluating book proposals for quality, content, and market viability.
  • Proposing suitable projects to the publishing committee, including compiling internal proposal documents and preliminary financial costings.
  • Negotiating contract terms with authors or their representatives to arrive at favourable agreements.
  • Working with editors in the wider team to develop and maintain strategy as a part of the overall strategy of the Humanities team.
  • Working closely with authors, and editorial, production, marketing, and sales colleagues to ensure that goals are met.

Qualifications

What we're looking for:

  • Must be a self-starter who can work quickly and independently, while liaising effectively with team members globally.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills, be highly organized, detail-oriented, and have a financial focus and ability to budget and analyse financial data, as well as the ability to prioritise a varied workload under pressure.
  • Strong word processing, spreadsheet, and database skills.
  • Experience in academic publishing and familiarity with the academic book publishing process.
  • A background in Museums Studies, Heritage Studies, Conservation or LIS is not essential, but commissioning experience is an advantage.

Additional Information

What we offer in return:

  • A salary of £31,600
  • 25 days annual leave
  • A discretionary additional 3 days at Christmas
  • 4 volunteering days annually
  • Day off for your birthday
  • Pension contributions
  • Seasonal social and charitable events
  • Training and development opportunities

Additional Information:
