Job Description

Job Title: Senior Manager of Early Childhood, Direct Service 

Internal Job Level: Senior Manager 

FLSA Status: Exempt

Supervisory Responsibilities: Currently none, future supervision anticipated 

Reporting to Title: Senior Director, Early Childhood 

Salary: $85,000 - 95,000 per year


SUMMARY: The Senior Manager of Early Childhood, Direct Service engages a network of early childhood direct service partners to inform the strategy development and execution for the Foundation’s work focused on providing equitable early education, health, mental health and economic well-being services and programs so that all young children and families can thrive. Through a community-centered approach, the Senior Manager collaborates with the Senior Director, Early Childhood and other Foundation team members to leverage their expert and applied knowledge of early childhood programs and services to help inform the development, integration and adaptation of the overall Early Childhood strategy, translate it into action, and ensure its alignment with the Foundation’s mission, vision, and values. The Senior Manager builds and manages culturally responsive and respectful relationships and partnerships with key partners and stakeholders, particularly those providing direct services, and represents the Foundation at the local, regional, and national levels.  

In addition to managing the Foundation’s Early Childhood direct service work, the Senior Manager, in close collaboration with the Senior Director and Director, Early Childhood, leverages feedback from direct service partners and stakeholders to inform early childhood policy work at the Foundation and at the  Children’s Equity Fund – the Foundation’s affiliated c4 sister organization. 

The Foundation structures our work through a portfolio of interconnected initiatives. All staff play a role in connecting and synthesizing knowledge across teams to further the Foundations’ Mission and Vision. Therefore, this person may be assigned to any of the Foundation’s initiatives based on initiative cycles and evolving organizational needs.

Strategy Development and Execution  

  • Identify direct service programs and partners that are aligned with the Foundation’s strategy and priorities.  
  • Inform the Foundation’s investments in direct service programs for young children and their families.  
  • Stay abreast of current issues in the early childhood field and use this understanding to further refine the Foundation’s early childhood work and strengthen its impact. 
  • Understand and help analyze the context of the geographic areas that are a priority for the Foundation.  
  • Engage partners and consultants in a manner that reflects the Foundation’s values and beliefs.  
  • Co-create agreements and contracts with consultants and partners.  
  • Inform the development of the Early Childhood budget. 
  • Develop and sustain meaningful connections with teams across the Foundation. 
  • Maintain regular communication and trust-based relationships with Foundation's partners. 
  • Capture knowledge from partners to support shared learning and policy implementation.  

Partner Relationship and Support  

  • Develop and sustain trust-based, reciprocal and culturally responsive relationships with early childhood partners, government agency leads and other stakeholders.  
  • Strengthen relationships among partners providing direct service supports.  
  • Identify resources needed to expand and sustain the scope of partner’s impact.  
  • Identify, elevate and help minimize barriers that partners identify.  
  • Identify, elevate and help implement solutions that partners identify.  
  • Co-create events, projects and initiatives for partners, with partners.  
  • Co-create processes and protocols to track qualitative and quantitative data needed for internal and external audiences.   
  • Leverage the strengths of partners and explore mutually beneficial projects that can be led and implemented with a cohort of partners. 
  • Increase opportunities for direct service partners to shape the policies and regulations that impact their work.  


FUNCTIONAL/TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Bachelor’s degree required. 
  • 5 – 7 years of overall experience in Early Childhood or a closely related field required, including experience working with programs serving young children and families. 
  • Experience providing training and/or technical assistance related to child development, child health, and/or family health and well-being.  
  • Knowledge of early education, health, mental health and economic well-being services and programs for young children (birth through age 5) and families in Washington, DC and/or a Florida preferred. 
  • General knowledge of the principles and best practices in early childhood education, including family engagement, health and mental health.  
  • Knowledge of publicly funded programs and services for young children (birth through age 5) and families.  
  • Ability to convey necessary information accurately, listen effectively, and ask questions when clarification is needed. 
  • Can effectively cope with change and work independently. 
  • Proficient collaborative, interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Ability to complete projects accurately and within deadlines.
