Platform Engineer

at

Shipsy

Company Description

At Shipsy, we aspire to be at the forefront of technology with next-generation products that change the way logistics is managed, and positively impact millions of people

Over the past 6 years, Shipsy has gained a dominant share in the domestic logistics space with over 30% of the India courier/express industry flowing through our system. We have also gained a foothold in international markets with companies in Saudi Arabia, UAE, North Africa, and Southeast Asia using our platform.

Global trade still largely runs on a messy chain of emails and excel files. Trillions of dollars of trade essentially runs on a platform called email. Shipsy is there to solve this problem. Shipsy's SaaS based platform helps businesses manage all aspects of international trade - working with vendors to procure rates for shipping, having a digital workflow management platform to complete all documentation related activities, integrations with global shipping lines to bring about end to end visibility and reducing invoicing errors through smart AI based reconciliation. ~10% of India's global trade through its platform, thereby helping 5 of the top 10 exporters and importers reduce costs and get end to end shipment visibility. With roots growing in Middle East and South East Asia, Shipsy is quickly becoming the de facto platform to manage international trade.

Shipsy has recently raised investment from Sequoia Capital's Surge and Info Edge (~$8m till date).

Job Description

As a SAAS company powering businesses across multiple geographies, Shipsy processes millions of transactions per day and supports its clients' operations with its AI powered platform, APIs and more. Think of this role as an air traffic controller of all the changes constantly in flight by engineering. Concretely, this team builds the platform, tools and environments to enable quick and safe change, such as configuration, features, and service deployments. There is a lot of work to do to make Shipsy’s engineers’ work easier and our platforms even more reliable than they are today, and we’d love for you to be a part of it. Your contributions will enable thousands of businesses that rely on Shipsy to manage their operations smoothly and help Shipsy expand in new markets.

We’re looking for people wanting to operate across all levels of the stack, from writing tools in Node/Python, to working on applications in React, and all the way down to interacting with host level networking and storage. The ideal candidate enjoys solving problems for other engineers yet operates with a product mindset.

Recent or in-progress ships include:

  • Moving us to a region with no downtime. Last year, we needed to migrate AWS regions, and we pulled it off with no negative effects on our users and no downtime

  • Re-Architecturing our critical APIs to meet increasing strict SLOs

  • Several projects around deploying and running code: helping us instantly roll back bad deploys so that we can recover quickly, creating advanced staging environments, and build infrastructure that lets us scale up our API workers in seconds in response to high API load

  • Host management and secrets management, with lots of collaboration from our Security team

  • Every service onboarded onto hands of automated deployments, such that a merge to master automatically rolls out to production without human monitoring or intervention

  • Pre-production environment which automates end-to-end tests for critical flows to catch self-inflicted incidents before user impact in production

  • Changelog to help engineers quickly discover what has changed in production, flattening the time in incidents spent figuring out the source of a problem

What You'll Do

  • Design, build, and maintain cloud infrastructure management tools used by all of Shipsy’s engineering teams

  • Debug production issues across services and levels of the stack

  • Monitor and scale our cloud infrastructure

  • Identify the shared compute needs across Shipsy, understand their specific requirements, and prioritize solutions

  • Improve the performance and reliability of our services including databases, CI/CD pipeline, web services, and other integrations, effectively improving the customer experience of our platform

  • Collaborate with other teams on security, automation, and internal tools

  • Evaluate and develop new tools, processes and technologies that can accelerate engineering

  • Identify the shared tooling needs across Shipsy, understand their specific requirements, and prioritize solutions

Qualifications

We’re looking for someone who has:

  • A strong engineering background and is interested in cloud infrastructure (Bonus points if you’ve managed at least one cloud provider such as AWS, GCP, or Azure)

  • Experience developing, maintaining and debugging distributed systems

  • Experience building infrastructure as a product centered around users’ needs

  • Experience optimizing the reliability and security of distributed systems

  • Experience with scaling and migrating systems in a changing environment that allows for little to no downtime

  • Experience working with tools such as Terraform, Jenkins, and/or Chef

  • Experience with Docker and containerization

  • 1 - 4 years of experience in Development.

  • Good knowledge of backend Technologies like Python, Nodejs etc. and experience with Databases like Postgresql, Mysql, monogdb etc.

It’s not expected that you’ll have deep expertise in every dimension above, but you should be interested in learning any of the areas that are less familiar.
