Shopify has redefined commerce by raising the standard for how companies of all sizes sell their products and services. To help power 1,000,000+ merchants in more than 175 different countries, Shopify is always growing and finding new ways to create more value for commerce businesses around the world.

Shopify's User Experience team is focused on enabling people to make commerce better at a global scale. With over 400 designers and content designers partnering closely with product managers, product researchers and developers working across the company, this team has a special role in building understanding and empathy for merchants. We believe in testing, iteration, and in giving people the room to experiment and grow. The UX team at Shopify has the mission to make commerce better for everyone… everywhere!

Job Description

Shop is on a mission to change how we shop. From the fastest checkout experience in Shop Pay to all-in-one order tracking and easy ways to find and shop local brands in app, Shop is making shopping better one step at a time for both shoppers and the merchants they buy from. Having launched a year ago, Shop is already one of the top 5 apps in North America and we're just getting started.

As a Staff Product Designer on one of our Growth focussed teams, you’ll lead design projects of significant scope, complexity and will take responsibility in the vision, strategy and execution. That means limitless opportunities for you to turn your ideas into reality. You’ll work closely with teams to frame user needs and behaviour, define optimized user flow, and tweak pixels before launch.

You’ll mentor junior and senior designers, and will collaborate with a multidisciplinary UX, product management, data, and engineering team to deliver thoughtful and polished design work.

We’re always on the lookout for people who are excited to work on hard problems at a global scale in a friendly, collaborative environment. If this sounds familiar, we’d love to hear from you.

Qualifications

  • Experience with a data-informed approach to design and using data as a tool to challenge your hypotheses, measure success of initiatives and spark new ideas about the next big opportunities that help drive retention.
  • Plenty of enthusiasm and persistence; you know that experimentation can require many iterations and not all ideas will hit the mark the first time. However, you’re excited about exploring different ideas to get there and building more context along the way.

  • Passion for solving product problems while balancing all facets of a user experience (strategy and research, information architecture, interaction design) and collaborating closely with multiple disciplines including product, engineering, content, and research.

  • Expert knowledge of the end to end iterative product design process including how to develop and use design research, job stories, journey mapping, wire-framing, prototyping, user testing, and high-fidelity visuals to achieve human-centred design solutions.

  • A deep empathy for the user, and tools to help others develop this empathy as well.

  • Excellent communication and storytelling skills; you have the ability to help your team and stakeholders understand the “why” behind your design rationale.

  • A scrappy, resourceful approach to projects - you’re proactive and great at self assigning tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Working with cross-functional teams (developers, product managers, researchers, content strategists, fellow designers) to drive design vision and strategy that meets the needs of our users. You will help other disciplines understand the value design can bring to a project and ultimately build and ship the best products.

  • Coupling big picture thinking with smart pragmatism; define the vision and think strategically about how to ship designs in smaller parts to validate assumptions.

  • Deliver customer value and business goals using a hypothesis-driven design approach to frame and validate your design solutions.

  • Iterate often and quickly using a data-informed approach.

  • Improve the buyer experience. You’ll work on projects from start to finish and explore buyer problems, content mapping, sketching, wireframing, low and high fidelity prototyping, and leading stakeholder reviews.

  • Being an active mentor for other designers, and helping to raise the bar and quality of our collective work.

  • Adjust quickly to shifting approaches, situations, and priorities.

  • Contributing to our growing design system in an effort to cultivate a coherent look and feel across the entire Shopify platform.

Additional Information

We know that applying to a new role takes a lot of work and we truly value your time. We are looking forward to reading your application. At Shopify, we are committed to building and fostering an environment where our employees feel included, valued, and heard.
