Job Description

The Privacy Coordinator reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

This position supports HIPAA Privacy standards, Corporate Compliance Integrity, Best Patient Experience, Exceptional Financial Performance (EFP) and JC compliance by assuring accurate and timely patient requests for alteration to clinical documentation within their medical record, including the tasks of accounting of disclosure, patient amendments and medical record restriction requests. 

Responsibilities:

  • Coordination of patient requests for alteration to clinical documentation within the medical record in a timely manner.
  • Work closely with Corporate Compliance and Integrity and physicians as the Patient Privacy Rights Coordinator in maintaining responsibility for the following patient requests
    • Accounting of Disclosures
    • Patient Amendments
    • Restriction Requests
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of federal and state privacy laws and HIPAA regulations to ensure organizational compliance.
  • Communicate regularly to patients via telephone and/or email.
  • Work closely with Corporate Compliance and Integrity Department to investigate incidents in which a potential breach of PHI may have occurred.
  • Perform patient privacy risk assessments and related compliance monitoring initiatives.
  • Applies analytical and problem-solving skills to identify opportunities for improvement in data quality.
  • Additionally, performs all other duties as assigned by the Operations Coordinator and/or Manager

 

Qualifications

Required:

  • Associate's degree in any field or a minimum of 3 years in a hospital or medical office environment focusing on customer service, medical billing, data abstraction, transcription, health information, etc.
  • Strong customer service skills with heavy attention to detail.
  • Oral, written and open communication skills along with analytical, leadership, organization, planning and time management skills.
  • Strong computer experience with Microsoft applications.
  • Demonstrates ability to multitask.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in healthcare related field or RHIT/RHIA credentials.
  • 5 years of relative experience in a hospital health information management department.
  • Demonstration of medical terminology knowledge.
  • Experience with Epic patient record database.
  • Strong systems support experience.
